Program Philosophy
People with disabilities are an integral part of the community and should receive necessary community-based supports.
This certificate program provides a concentration in on-the-job training in direct service situations, as well as specialized courses that relate to developmental disabilities.

Learning Outcomes
With the addition of experience in the field of disability and upon successful completion of all Disability Specialist certificate program requirements, graduates will - Define and discuss basic definitions, causes, psychological characteristics and educational approaches relevant to children with disabilities.
- Discuss how children and adults with disabilities have unique abilities rather than limitations.
- Compare various learning theories and their application to children and adults with disabilities.
- Demonstrate an understanding of ethical standards including confidentiality.
- Define ethical standards in the disability field and demonstrate confidentiality in written and oral assignments.

*Becoming Connecticut State Community College A merger of Connecticut’s 12 community colleges is underway. As a part of this merger, modifications will be made to academic programs. Students who do not complete their programs by the end of the Spring 2023 term will be matched with the Connecticut State Community College (CT State) program that most closely aligns with the student’s Spring 2023 program and is offered at the current Manchester Community College location.
